Why I Left the System to Help Women Reclaim Their Birth Experience
Mar 05, 2025
I was working inside the system, following protocols, and doing everything “right.” But the more I saw, the harder it became to ignore the truth: women were being pressured into unnecessary interventions. Their voices were dismissed. Their instincts were silenced.
Birth was no longer about the mother. It had become a checklist of what the hospital wanted, faster labours, fewer “risks,” and more control over a process that was never theirs to control. I saw women leaving the birth room traumatised, not empowered. And that is when I knew: I could not be part of this anymore.
So, I walked away from the system and straight into my mission, to show women the truth about birth. To help them take back their power. To make sure they never feel unheard, unprepared, or pushed into something they do not want.
This is what I'll teach inside Reclaiming Birth.
The Problem With the System
In today’s healthcare system, birth is treated like a medical event. While medical intervention saves lives when needed, it has become the default rather than the exception.
The result?
- Higher rates of unnecessary inductions, C-sections, and interventions
- Women feeling powerless, dismissed, and afraid
- A culture of fear that disconnects women from their instincts
In Australia alone, over 35% of births are now C-sections, yet research shows many are not medically necessary. Instead, they are driven by hospital policies, time constraints, and fear of liability. This approach may prioritise efficiency, but it often comes at the cost of the mother’s experience.
Birth is not something to be managed. It is a natural, physiological process that works best when it is trusted and supported. Yet, too often, women are left feeling like passive participants in their own births.
Why Reclaiming Birth Matters
Birth is more than a physical event. It is a transformative experience that shapes how women feel about themselves and their bodies. When women are empowered to make informed choices and trust their instincts, they walk out of birth feeling confident, capable, and strong.
Here is what happens when you take back control:
- You trust your body’s wisdom: Birth is designed to work. When fear is replaced with confidence, labour progresses more naturally.
- You make informed decisions: Understanding your options helps you advocate for what you want and say no to what you do not.
- You stay connected to your instincts: Your body knows how to birth. Trusting that process reduces fear and increases confidence.
- You leave birth empowered, not traumatised: When you feel heard, respected, and in control, birth becomes a source of strength, not fear.
This is not about rejecting medical care, it is about ensuring that interventions are used when truly necessary, not as routine procedures. It is about putting women back at the centre of their birth experience.
How to Take Back Control of Your Birth Experience
- Educate Yourself: Knowledge is power. Understand the physiological process of birth and the benefits and risks of common interventions.
- Know Your Rights: You have the right to informed consent and refusal. No one can make decisions about your body without your permission.
- Build Your Support Team: Surround yourself with people who respect your choices and will advocate for your wishes. This includes your birth partner, doula, and care provider.
- Create a Birth Plan: A clear birth plan helps communicate your preferences and ensures your voice is heard, even if circumstances change.
- Trust Your Instincts: Your body knows how to birth. Listen to its signals and trust that you have the strength and wisdom to bring your baby into the world.
